General Data Protection Regulation, also known as GDPR, is the European Union’s new set of laws and policies that are set to govern how businesses will deal with the private information of consumers, specifically the citizens of the European Union.
Effective from May 25th, 2018, the new GDPR compliance regulations are set to change the way consumer data is used and stored.
With the goal of giving the power back to the consumer, in terms of their private information and how it is managed, the new GDPR regulations focus on the consent protocols that companies are supposed to implement for collecting consumer’s personal data, and also, the ways in which companies deal with the private information of their consumers.
Even though it is focused around citizens of the European Union, GDPR compliance is a big deal for all internet traders everywhere, as the GDPR laws will not only apply to European companies, but to any and every website in the world that has a site visitor who is a member of the European Union. This will affect the majority of websites, and also, the developers that create them.
Any data collected from a website, including, for example, the personal data collected from a contact form, will have to follow the protocols set out by GDPR compliance.
From the perspective of a marketer, business owner, brand manager or similar, collected data is extremely valuable as the insights into a consumer’s behavior and patterns thereof can lead to incredible business strategies that’ll drive product and services sales. However, from the perspective of the consumer, things look a very different, and gaining greater levels of advocacy over private information may be a very welcomed change.
GDPR will take effect on May 25th 2018, and will be an important transition for website operators everywhere. If you’d like to learn more about the new GDPR regulations, watch Episode 69 of Divi Chat, and have a look at some of these resources on the topic:
